The Ideal Steel for Value-Added Processors

EPS' clean, uniform, oil-free surface offers a better base for downstream processes.


Processes like galvanizing, coil coating and cold rolling perform better with EPS-pickled steel. EPS mitigates surface defects like silicon streaks, minor roll marks and pitting. Certain cleaning steps can be eliminated by virtue of the clean, oil-free EPS surface. For example, batch galvanizers who switch to EPS will no longer need an acid bath to remove HRPO's oil. And because EPS can be ordered with a smoother (lower Ra) or rougher (higher Ra) surface, processors can select an EPS surface texture that works best for them.

A Growing Base of Processing Experience


EPS pickled coils have replaced HRPO in nearly every value-added downstream process, as well as numerous fabrication processes. The EPS coils have been supplied with oil applied, so as to be completely interchangeable with HRPO, and oil-free, so as to capture one of EPS' most important benefits. Batch Galvanizing
A processor batch galvanized parts made from oil-free EPS. The galvanizing went well – parts looked great. The normal process consists of acid cleaning and flux bath, then zinc bath. EPS eliminates the acid bath.
Hot Dip Galvanizing
When galvanizing EPS with heavier zinc coatings, adhesion was found to be much better than when using HRPO.
Cold Reduction
Cold Reduction processed performed have been:
   •   annealed, then cold reduced
   •   cold reduced, then annealed
   •   cold reduced, then galvanized

The EPS low surface peak standard deviation (Rz) resulted in less draft from cold reduction. EPS removal of silicon streaks was noted, plus no oil left in bell annealing lines because there's no oil on EPS.
EPS is the ideal base material for cold rolling:
• more consistent surface (low Rz) results in less draft,
• mitigates silicon streaks that acid pickling highlights,
• no oil fouls annealing bell lines when bell annealing.
