The next evolution in EPS technology is here. EPS Generation 4 is a redesign of nearly every aspect of EPS technology – from slurry flow to a radically different cabinet configuration to the new EPS Scalebreaker accompanying the EPS cell. With Generation 4, carbon-free EPS pickling has reached $12/ton – well below the operating cost of a push-pull acid pickle line!
That means the EPS cost advantage over acid pickling is even greater with Gen 4. This advantage is magnified for steel grades that are notoriously difficult to pickle with acid, like AHSS, silicon steel and stainless. The Generation 4 EPS Cell is simpler, yet more efficient and powerful than all previous models. In fact, a Gen 4 Cell uses only four (4) Slurry Turbines, yet it descales at 75% of the rate of a Generation 3 Cell that used eight (8) Slurry Turbines.
The first EPS Gen 4 Cell entered operation in TMW’s EPS Coil Line in January 2022. Our operating experience since then demonstrates numerous advantages over our previous Gen 3 Cell:
- Maintenance time reduced 20%
- Consumables (grit, filter media, etc.) cost reduced 32%
- Wear items (turbine blades, grit valves, etc.) cost reduced 27%
GREATER FLEXIBILITY IN BUILDING EPS PICKLING LINES
The individual Gen4 Turbine Chamber and Tank is much smaller, simpler and lighter than previous models. That means it is less expensive to ship and install. And if the primary components are made by a local fabricator under TMW’s authorization, they are less expensive to build. That’s more flexibility for EPS equipment sourcing.
With EPS Generation 4, we are also introducing the EPS Scalebreaker. This compact, pull-through unit increases EPS Line speed by as much as 35% for material between 1. 5 mm to 5.7 mm (0.060 to .225 inch) making it an important component of the EPS Coil Line. This unique machine eliminates the need for big, expensive bridle rolls, necessary for conventional scale breakers, since the strip is only pulled with just 11,000 kg of recoiler tension.
